Neurodivergent Affirming Massage

  • ND affirming massage is a sensory-aware, consent-based massage which is a bodywork style designed specifically for autistic and ADHD adults, as well as anyone who experiences sensory sensitivities, anxiety, or touch-related overwhelm. Additionally, this approach is inclusive of all neurodivergent identities, recognizing and welcoming the diverse ways people experience the world. It prioritizes autonomy, communication, and nervous-system safety at every step.

This approach recognizes that everybody processes sensation differently. Instead of assuming what will feel good or relaxing, the session is built collaboratively—moment by moment—based on your preferences, boundaries, and sensory needs.

  • 1. Consent as an Ongoing Dialogue

Consent isn’t a one-time question. It’s a continuous, pressure-free conversation. You can change your mind at any point, request adjustments, or pause the session without explanation.

    2. Sensory Awareness and Customization

Every aspect of the session can be tailored, including:

    • Lighting and sound levels

    • Pressure, speed, and type of touch

    • Talking or quiet

    • Temperature and texture preferences

    3. Predictability and Transparency

Many neurodivergent clients feel more at ease when they know what to expect. Sessions typically begin with a collaborative intake where you can share your preferences and boundaries. You are then given clear explanations of the techniques that may be used, allowing you the ability to opt in or out of any element. Throughout the session, optional sensory check-ins ensure that the experience remains tailored to your comfort.

    4. Nervous-System Support

The goal is not just muscle relief but creating a space where your nervous system can downshift. This includes pacing, grounding techniques, and honoring your sensory thresholds.

  • This style of massage is especially supportive for:

    • Autistic adults

    • ADHD adults

    • Highly sensitive people

    • Queer and Trans adults

    • Trauma survivors

    • Anyone facing body dysmorphia or body dysphoria

    • Anyone who prefers structure, clarity, and autonomy in bodywork

You do not need a diagnosis to benefit. If you've ever felt misunderstood, rushed, or overwhelmed in traditional massage settings, or hesitant to try massage because you're concerned these needs aren't being heard or met, this approach may be a better fit.

  • 1. You Stay in Control

Your comfort and agency guide the session. Nothing happens without your explicit consent.

    2. It Reduces Sensory Overload

By adjusting the environment and techniques to your needs, the session becomes more soothing and less unpredictable.

    3. It Builds Trust and Safety

Clear communication and predictable pacing help your body relax more deeply.

    4. It Honors Neurodivergent Communication Styles

You can communicate however works best, whether verbally, nonverbally, through gestures, or with pre-session notes. We also accommodate the use of communication boards and the presence of support persons if needed.  Support persons are welcome to participate as observers or active contributors, based on your preference, ensuring a comfortable environment for your needs. These options ensure that all communication and safety needs are respected and tailored to your comfort.

    5. It Supports Emotional and Physical Regulation

When your sensory needs are respected, your body can shift into a calmer, more grounded state. Optional sensory check-ins throughout the session give you the opportunity to express how you're feeling at different points in the session. These check-ins might involve simple questions about comfort, pressure, or temperature to ensure your needs are continuously met. You are encouraged to communicate openly—by using any preferred method—to make the experience as supportive and effective as possible. Techniques are adjusted in real time based on your feedback, creating an adaptive, personalized session.
